| Almost any Home Automation stuff (110v!) | | Copy this |
I'm not a fan of X-10's popup ads and other aggressive marketing techniques, but there's plenty of companies APART from X-10 who make devices which use the X-10 protocol, and there's loads of other home automation stuff. There's home automation books, devices, controllers, etc. Almost anything would interest me.
Beware! Don't choose anything that's 240V-only, as Canada uses 110V! |

| Barcode Scanner | | Copy this |
I'd like to do some geeky things like scan stuff we're about to throw away / run out of, to automatically add them to our shopping list. There's also other cool geeky stuff I could do like scanning a CD cover to play the CD, scan the ISBN bar-codes of all the books in our "home library", just keeping inventories of all my stuff, etc etc etc.
They've been known to give barcode scanners away FOR FREE in the US, it ought to be possible to find a fairly cheap one around. It doesn't need to be too fancy, as long as I can make it work with my own software, I'll be happy.
Barcode scanners tend to be be USB input devices these days, and powered off the USB, so it SHOULDN'T be a problem using it in either the UK or Canada. |

| DVD region-free hack for Sony DVP-CX850 | | Copy this |
| The DVD people sell only broken DVD players, which play only DVDs from your home "region". If you buy cheaper DVDs whilst abroad, you can't play them on your player. To make matters worse, they have adverts on the start of films that you're NOT ALLOWED to fast-forward through, even if you've seen it a dozen times before and hate it! How stupid is THAT?!?!? Luckily, this is a free country, and people sell little gizmo's which can fix your player. You can then pretend you're in the USA and play USA titles, and fast-forward through the waffle - exactly like any CONSUMER's DVD player would do. I'd like one of these modifications for my DVP-CX850. I'd like it to be the type where I can choose a region, NOT the ones that try to choose automatically, as recent RCA titles aren't fooled. |
